History of The Crown Inn

The Crown Inn at Goostrey was built in the 15th Century, when the Tudors ruled the land, and retains many original aspects in addition to its extensions and modernisations. The owners, Cynthia and Gerry Bridgwood, will be delighted to show you the oldest parts when you visit.

The Crown Inn is very much at the centre of village life and is a traditional "local" which still retains its original Tap Room.

The collection of photographs on the walls of past village events, Rose Day Festival processions and village scenes, reflect the busy life of the modern village as well as its past. Many different clubs have been added to the 150 year-old Gooseberry Society (pictured here circa 1948), which still meets at The Crown Inn.

In 1969 when Jodrell Bank drew scientists and journalists to cover the moon landing, The Crown was granted an all night drinking extension. A special "Moonshine Punch" was concoted but a mass invasion of drinkers from all over the country forced the closing of the doors in the early hours of the morning!

In 1991, when we took over, the Crown Inn looked very different. We have undertaken a lot of renovation and extension since then:

Goostrey has always been keen on sport and a Trust now runs a playing-field with facilities for football, tennis, bowls etc. The Crown's owner Gerry Bridgwood, who once played for Stoke City, is well qualified to lend a sympathetic ear to thirsty sports-folk.
